In today’s e-course, we shall be discussing how to start a blog.We have covered a litttle ground about blogging in the last two posts.
By now, I suppose you have already made up your mind about blogging. If not, I SUGGEST you read the previous post.
“No, I have been following the Money Blogger e-course Series and am quite satisfied and ready to start blogging”. Ok, let’s proceed…
I know that starting a blog can indeed be confusing. Around 5 years ago when I started my first blog, I practically knew nothing about blogging. However, Google was a friend and a reliable tool. I searched for blogging guides in Google. However, the problem was that, most of the information available at that time required a little bit of programming and technical skills in which I was deficient at that time.
CMS are pieces of software with which you can update, add content or edit your blog content. CMS includes Wordress, Blogger, Tumblr, etc.
It doesn’t matter whether you are 15 years, 40 years, male or female, partly or fully employed. Blogging is extremely easy and you hardly need coding skills if you are using a CMS, which is often available for free on the internet.
So,you may want to ask which Blogging platform to use, the free or self-hosted. I will keep the ball rolling by answering that question based on my experience.
To start with, WordPress has become the number one CMS platform for blogging. Based on research, it has been downloaded over 72 million times and many popular blogs and websites out there use it.
Here is why I tend to favour WordPress as the as the best platform on which you should start your blog:
Self-hosted WordPress gives you a variety of free themes and layouts to choose from WordPress is easy to write your blog posts and add pictures to your blogs.
WordPress makes it easy for people to comment and share your blog posts, thereby boosting your traffic
It enables you to categorize your posts effectively
Custom menus and navigations are better and easily created in WordPress
WordPress is very Search Engine Friendly and has the potential to rank high in the search engines.
What about the free in “free” Blogs, Is “Free” actually free?
Well, you must have heard that you can create a free blog on WordPress.com, blogger.com or even tumblr.com. However, the truth is that such blogs are not free in the real sense of freedom.
Let me tell you why a free blog on blogger.com, wordpress.com or even tumblr.com is actually NOT free:
1) You have NO control over your blog. Yes, that is the bitter truth!
For example, if you create a free blog with the URL, yourname.blogspot.com, yourname.wordpress.com or yourname.tumblr.com, you are subject to the terms and conditions of the extension owners—which are Blogger, WordPress or Tumblr as in this example. Should the owner of this property decide that your blog no longer fits with their policies, they could just delete your blog without any warnings!
And just within seconds, you can be sure that all your years of hard work and probably income realized from the blog will vanish within a few seconds. You should build a good blogging business that is within your reach and control and not determined by another person’s dictates!
2. Free blogs have limited themes, layouts and plugins.
Therefore, you can be sure that the appearance of your blog will be dependent on the design the blog owner deems fit. You will just have to play along with what they have in mind. Unlike a self-hosted blog where you can customize your blog to fit whatever layout you have in mind.
3. Free Blogs will not allow you to have your own domain.
Instead, they will give you a sub-domain. For example, one of my health blogs (humanhealthhub.com), has its own unique domain name which I chose based on my own decision. If I were to create it as a free blog hosted with wordpress, for example, it would probably be humanhealthhub.wordpress.com, which would be rather clumsy and unprofessional!
However, you can still start a free blog if you don’t plan to blog more than few months. The best option remains to blog from your own self-hosted domain (for example, yourblog.com). A self-hosted domain gives you full control over your blog and it will look so professional that people will want to take you seriously. Then, you can earn the authority and respect you deserve as a professional blogger when you blog and share your knowledge. In addition, you can even earn some money from a self-hosted wordpress blog.
